The Short Answer

Stay in Gatlinburg if you want the national park on your doorstep. Our pick is the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Water Park: its two-bedroom villas sleep eight in about 1,230 square feet, with two bathrooms, a kitchen and a fireplace, and the Wild Bear Falls water park is on site. MountainLoft is a quieter Hilton choice less than 3 miles from downtown.

Stay in Pigeon Forge if the town's attractions are the priority: Mill Springs Lodge is less than a mile from them. Sevierville is the closest of the three towns to Knoxville's airport, and Club Wyndham Smoky Mountains there has two-bath units for eight.

Parking in the National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has no entrance fee, but any vehicle parked in the park for more than 15 minutes needs a parking tag. Tags come as daily, weekly or annual passes and are sold at visitor centers, at machines in the park (credit card only) and on Recreation.gov. Vehicles with a disability placard don't need one, and tags aren't required on the park's free entrance days.

  • One tag per car. If your group is driving two cars to the trailheads, buy two.
  • Check the unit, not just the resort. The Hilton resorts list two-bedroom suites but publish few details about them, so read the room description for bathrooms and beds.
  • Club Wyndham rules. Club Wyndham Smoky Mountains requires a minimum number of nights, and most Club Wyndham resorts require the person checking in to be at least 21.
